Dr. Rick Thompson

Founder and Medical Advisor – MedLaunch

Medical Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support

Dr. Thompson grew up in Philadelphia, attended the University of Pennsylvania where he took courses at the Wharton School of Business, while majoring in the Biological Basis of Behavior. He went on to attend Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school, followed by a general surgery residency at Duke University and cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Virginia.

Dr. Thompson is an expert in physician performance and growing specialty medical practices. While at Lancaster General Hospital, he doubled the size of the thoracic surgery practice and helped them become a nationally ranked leader in quality outcomes. As Medical Director of Thoracic Surgery and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Bryan Health, he transformed a practice lagging in quality and volume, into a regional leader. He doubled thoracic surgery volume and improved quality in cardiac surgery helping them be named a 3-Star STS (top 12% nationally) program for the first time in its history. He started a mechanical circulatory assist device program at Bryan that has saved lives and grows each year. Dr. Thompson now leads Bryan Health’s new initiative to build an integrated cancer center.

His entrepreneurial spirit started at Duke when he and others, started MercuryMD, an early digital health startup delivering patient information from hospital systems to physician Palm Pilots. The company sold for $48 million. In 2014, he and Dr. Ryan Whitney founded Together+Clinic, a digital health startup, with the vision to revolutionize continuum care in medicine. Dr. Thompson is a frequent speaker at national conferences and will finish his MBA in 2017 at Nebraska Wesleyan University. He and his wife Jennifer have two children.

Ashley Ulrich

Founder and President – MedLaunch

Marketing Physician Liaison

Ashley Ulrich has twenty years of experience in business development and marketing at numerous organizations in both the technology and pharmaceutical industries. As Regional Director of Business Development at a large human resources technology firm, she consistently led her division in revenue and gained experience in both technology marketing and HR consulting. She spent several years in the pharmaceutical industry, successfully marketing to healthcare professionals and promoting multiple products for a variety of disease states for two large pharmaceutical companies. As Business Development Director at a small human capital software firm, she marketed web-based leadership and learning management systems and consulting nationwide and experienced the challenges that come with starting at the ground level in a startup organization. Most recently, Ashley was an independent contractor for a small medical marketing firm, representing a new pain management practice. She built and executed a marketing and promotional plan that led to a significant increase in new patient referrals and revenue.

Ashley holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska where she studied International Business and Spanish. She lives in Lincoln with her husband Mike and their four children and has a passion for fitness, enjoys running and cycling and is a Certified Personal Trainer, Pilates coach and Certified Nutritionist.


Liz Ring Carlson

Founder, Marketing, and Public Relations– MedLaunch

Liz has been in the insurance and financial services industry for over 20 years specializing in employee training, public relations, media and community relations and marketing. In 2014, Liz launched her own PR business. Liz is passionate about helping others “stand out and shine brighter” whether it’s in business, public relations or in life. Helping others strive to reach their personal goals is an important value to Liz. Her strengths include strategic planning, coaching and getting results.

Community involvement is a priority for Liz, especially civic responsibility where she has worked on numerous campaigns, fundraising and grassroots projects. She enjoys networking and connecting people. She is active with Lincoln Public Schools, RISE Lincoln, a female business leaders’ organization and the TEDx Lincoln Board where she was the 2016 emcee. Over the years, she has been active with the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, numerous nonprofits, and Marketing/PR associations.

Liz grew up in Lincoln, NE, and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in History and an emphasis in Leadership Development. She was the 2008 Young Professional of the Year and one of the Lincoln Business Journal’s “40 under 40” in 2006. Liz and her husband Justin have three children.
